Prevent the Threat of a Possible Fire with a Sweep

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Chimney fires occur at an alarming rate in this country. On average, there are more than 25,000 chimney fires a year, and that accounts for more than $120 million in damage. As temperatures drop and the leaves change, many Siouxlanders will fire up the fireplace, but not know their chimney can be home to a disaster. In fact, there are more than two dozen things inspectors check before signing off on your fireplace.

“Most people just look at the chimney and just think that’s all their is to it, but there are several components in the fireplace and the chimney that need to be inspected to be in compliance,” said Art Figueroa who is the General Manager of A-1 Preferred Air Duct Cleaning. One danger for wood-burning fireplaces is a build-up called creosote that’s formed from a lack of air in the chimney. Figueroa said, “that then creates like this really thick glossy surface that doesn’t really come off. We would have to treat it especially to remove it.”

Most people don’t know the risk of this build-up. “It would take about a 16th of an inch of build up in a chimney to spark a fire,” said Figueroa. You can also place a cover over your chimney to help protect it from weather and pests. Gas is also a popular heating option in Siouxland, but that has its own set of issues to watch out for.

“Make sure that it starts every time we want to prevent any gas leaks, want to make sure that it is safe and we’re not having any ventilation issues in the home,” said Cory Tucker, Kalin’s Indoor Comfort. Professionals recommend regardless of which type of fireplace you have, that you get it inspected or cleaned at least once a year. “if you use it a lot during the wintertime then it is recommended perhaps twice a year if that is your main source of heat,” said Figueroa. Taking care of the maintenance now can save you the trouble later. “We just want to make sure it is safe to operate and so that you can enjoy and be comfortable all winter long,” said Tucker. When getting your chimney inspected, make sure that it is performed by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.
